Background

A leading mining company fights a hostile takeover attempt initiated by a minority shareholder with strong connections in the local and international media.

Challenges

The shareholder used his media contacts to create and promote negative articles about the company. As these articles were published on central media outlets, they ranked well on Google and were difficult to combat.

For years the company had maintained a low profile, especially online. They had no business profiles, hardly any positive articles published about them, and only one outdated website under their control. As a result they had very little digital means with which to fight back against the shareholder’s attack.

Results

Within eight months of online reputation management seven out of 10 results on the first search result page for the company name were under the clients’ control. Four were officially and clearly theirs (company websites, professional profiles), and three were disguised as unrelated websites.
